The recent posts from Champions Online devs have been great, especially the ones concerning the power sets however the posts use terms which we have never heard of before. They are mostly around how a gamer activates their champion’s abilities: click, tap, charge, maintain, innate passive and slotted passive. Now that seems like a lot of ways to activate an ability. Lets look closer at each one.
Click: This is just like all MMO’s you click on the ability and it activates.

Charged: Some abilities can be charged which will make a power do a different effect.

Tap: Click an ability that can be charged and it will perform the tap effect.
Charge: Hold down the mouse button or key and a bar will show that the ability is charging. Once the mouse button or key is released the ability will activate. A player can activate the ability at any time as the bar fills up giving the players the option to use a power at varying strengths.
Lets looks at an example:

Chain Lightning allows you to emit a powerful, directed blast of electrical energy at a target, which might arc to other nearby targets as well.
Tap
* Single target electrical damage
* Chance of applying Negative Ions, a short duration effect which causes future Electrical attacks to arc to secondary targets
Charge
* Chains the effects of the Tap action up to three additional targets in proximity to other affected targets
* Charging does not increase the energy cost of Chain Lightning
So if you are using the ability Chain Lighting and you tap or just click the ability you will zap a single target doing some damage and causing a debuff. However if you charge or hold down the button and release, Chain Lighting will cause damage to up to three targets instead of just one.
Maintain: The reverse of charge. A bar displays when the ability is clicked and held. The ability will activate and continue to perform until the bar is empty or the player releases their mouse button or key.

Innate Passive: Once you have the ability nothing else needs to be done the power is always on.

Slotted Passive: Depending on the role your champion is in defensive, offensive or balanced different slots will appear on your power bar. Each role will give you different types of slots but abilities put in all passive slots will always be active.
Well it looks like those are all the ways you can activate an ability when playing Champions Online. I personally think its a great idea, it will make gamers think rather than repeatedly mash the same button.
